History gets whitewashed every day, but Siqueiros’ “América Tropical” was infamously painted over within eight years of its 1932 completion. This time, while reporting an update for my Culture Mix column on plans to once again exhibit the long-lost mural, I discovered that the famed Mexican artist had actually started work on a replacement for “America Tropical,” which had been whitewashed soon after completion in 1932. While constructing the protective shelter for América Tropical, workers excavated a well-known portion of the Zanja Madre, or mother ditch, a brick-lined pipe used for transferring water from the Los Angeles River to the early pueblo.
