Courtesy of Raw Material Company (who used the pseudonym Joe Ouakam) was born in Senegal in 1945 and studied Art at  National des Arts as well as Philosophy, Law and Sociology at Université de Dakar in the late 1960s.

He had lived amongst his artworks in his courtyard-home-studio: a living, dynamic exhibition.


Drawing Fragments of  writings were central to the exhibition, as were footage and videos, and the short films of  featured as actor in Bruyere’s durational performance installations. In 2010 Dakar’s National Gallery of Art devoted a retrospective to him. interdisciplinary work encompassed painting, drawing, sculpting, assemblage, installation, performance, playwriting, essay and note writing, and poetry. Also known as Joe Ouakam, was one of the co-founders of Laboratoire Agit’Art, a Dakar-based collective dedicated to revitalizing African art through the examining of international forms of artistic expression and schools of thought. When I read that artist Issa Samb passed away earlier this week, something compelled me to learn more.
