Turbulent Souls
At the end of the book, Stephen meets Cardinal O'Conner. All raised Catholic. To see the reaction of Solly's father and Florence's mother, I see how important religion is to some people. “On holy days, they marched through the yard in a procession to honor the Virgin Mary, their little necks draped in scapulars, their little hands pressed together just beneath the chin in perfect prayerful formation.” Stephen, like his brothers before him, became an altar boy, delighting in the intricacy of the task and memorizing the entire Mass.In leaving the city and—in imitation of Catholic Worker farms—establishing themselves on the land with a large family, the Dubners felt themselves to be living out a special vocation, one no less important than holy orders. They risked their life to come to America to have the right to practice their own religion. Both intensely personal and yet full of a broader societal narrative, Turbulent Souls is a family history and story of 20th century America. It took a lot of searching and believing to put the struggle to an end. . The journey Stephen Dubner’s parents went through is prelude to his own journey of discovering their past and his own, which he reclaimed as part of his own blossoming as an adult in full charge of his own belief system. He believes this because of the signing between Israel and the Holy See. Early on, maybe 50 pages in, I thought I might not finish but something changed and I fully engaged. Solly and Florence converted on their own free will. As Stephen would later come to see it, the farm was “Eden,” a protective Catholic familial paradise from which difficult temptations were banished.
While this book was based on Catholicism and Judaism, it was truly about families, protecting those we love, and learning where we come from. I did not like that at all.
Here he became interested in Catholicism. When I first heard of this book, I thought the parents were forced to convert. I do not, howeveThis was an interesting account of three religious journeys. Solly had to then return back to the islands. I think Stephen finds his peace when he and his mother stop fighting. The last half of the book was he and his mother arguing constantly. Even after most of the children had left home, the Dubners’ piety grew in intensity. Dubner rediscovers his Jewish roots in NYC, even editing a book of the Chabad Rebbe’s writings, and (re?)converts. Turbulent Souls is an expansion of that article into a book of unusual drama and thoughtfulness. When she died, this began his depression. Their rejection of their superstitious Jewish parents is understandable, but they go full throttle—becoming super-Catholics—first Dorothy Dayniks, then anti-abortion activists. She would always argue that Catholicism was the true religion. I couldn't connect with him and I couldn't empathize with his plight. Being a Catholic, everything he said about this was correct.
I looked up some of the Rabbis to whom Dubner referred as well as some of the books he mentions. After all his research he believed he finally knew his father and that God wanted him to be a Jew. He believed it made more sense to him. His devout parents attended mass at every opportunity and named their eight children after saints. Some believe that converts to Judaism are drawn to the religion because they are born with Jewish souls. Was hoping to learn a bit more about Catholicism and did learn just a bit. What I found ultimately fascinating is Mr. Dubner’s quest to dissect his parents’ conversion when one can understand that religious or spiritual affiliation or belief is so tenuous (sometimes), so sublime (sometimes), so effervescent (sometimes), that it’s daunting to find words to describe one’s own or even more difficult someone else’s beliefs. 038072930X They finally got a break and started traveling and performing.

I wish I had done a better job of learning about my parents while people were still alive to ask. A veteran of World War II and an aspiring newspaperman, Paul spent much of his working life in blue-collar positions and farmed on the side. As it got more into the life of the Narrator himself, I found that I just didn't relate. He was the youngest of eight children. I just wanted to get through the end.
He has the right to know his past and even convert back to his original religion. I can see where Solly's father and Florence's mother are coming from. A long section at the end is devoted to the journey towards rapprochement with his mother. For anyone who has ever felt like a fish out of water. Eight children and a hardscrabble life on an upstate NY farm later, the father wrestles with depression and no career prospects. Its quite interesting how both of Stephen's parents became Catholics. Turbulent Souls, the book that grew out of that article, is an intimate memoir of a man in search of a Jewish heritage he never knew he had. This book did help me understand faith of religions more.
This is a surprisingly page-turning family drama memoir that will be useful for discussions between Catholics and Jews—both faiths are presented with virtues and warts.
