The film does a good job setting the scene showing the corrosive impact of occupied life in a small, landlocked country where the majority of people had no way out. History buffs, however, will understand the real reason for the assassination so for them this will never be a problem with the film. The Nazis were ruthless, subhuman creatures that should be exterminated from the face of the earth. Extremely well directed movie, with an eye for detail and gritty realism throughout.
A difficult subject to get right and hard to please the purist. No holds barred but not too much in the portrayal of the horror. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Acting is 1st class. In fact, for history buffs it forces you to confront some uncomfortable realities about the assassination plot that we have probably never had to think of; such as how a small group of London-trained Czechoslovakians could arrive in Prague unannounced to the rag tag remnants of the Czechoslovakian underground and convince them to support them in a plot to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich. Good lives. Very few additional characters were needed to be added to keep the plot line flowing since the story itself is so riveting.
It makes for great drama in a movie that, going in, everyone knows does not have a happy ending for the Czechs. I've never seen the 50 Shades of...but Jamie Dornan is quite good. There are no major sub-plots that bring in colorful characters or exciting events, no "serious" steamy romance love stories that in other movies (i.e. Certainly a very important story that deserved to be told as well as possible, and this film does 100% justice to it. Husband and I were deeply moved by this drama based on a heart-breaking true story of sacrifice for the greater good during WWII. His very presence on the screen is magnetic and haunting. For a lot of people survival wasn't possible and the Czechs suffered Nazi occupation longer than any other country.
