I love Detroit, I'm from Detroit. That does not come through in the film. Detropia shows the heart and soul of Detroit and how its remaining citizens cope with urban decay as a result of the loss of its industrial plants. It is well worth buying and watching, especially if you're from the Metro-Detroit area. The extent of the distress and abandonment in the cores of our cities resulting from de-industrialization, historic segregation and discrimination patterns, suburban sprawl, erosion of a viable tax base, racism, inability to embrace the concept desegregation and civil rights legislation, fear, despair, crumbling infrastructure systems, disinvestment in our urban school systems, and environment justice issues defines our “Fourth World” status. This documentary was okay prior to Detroit's bankruptcy....but now that the city is making a comeback, it is no longer as relevant.
What the film maker shows is real, but what she doesn't show is why it is so.
Its current state is the result of years of mismanagement, racism and nearsightedness that drove out the middle class and left its current shell. That does not come through in the film. There was so little attention on those trying to restore their society, instead focusing on the woe-is-me folks. Everything is not about big cooperate profits, let us think about our workers, our society, our cities, our own survival, and the working middle class.
