Rossum was okay but not great, neither her acting nor her vocal ability was even half that of the musical w Boggess. On newer tv's of today I think it's worth making the switch. Love Never Dies, the sequel to this movie is out - and it has superb vocals. The Phantom, a disfigured musical genius. The story is just over an hour so it moves quickly. !, Gerard Butler (as the Phantom), Emmy Rossum (as Christine) and Patrick Wilson (as Raoul) play out the fateful love triangle that unfurls in splendor, suspense. As for the movie itself, I found it highly watchable. I love the older version with Burt ... It's simply beautiful in story and version alike and I will always recommend this movie to anyone! It gets 1 point for staying pretty close to the original story and some of the background animation is good, but it ultimately falls flat. In the musical version, I didn't like how Karimloo's disfigurement was his entire lips and once he took the mask off he was downright creepy, like Frankenstein. Subpar animation can be forgiven if the voiceover talent is great. Lovely production, nicely done with flashbacks, and the end scene in the graveyard is particularly poignant. I think (personally) outside of the theatre this is the beat adaptation of the story. I also love the very masculine and dark quality of Butler's voice even if he doesn't go as big as Lewis or Karimloo. Gerard Butler is a tad more swashbuckling---and his makeup less repulsive--- than his stage counterparts, so we have to buy more into Christine's rejection of him. The Phantom can be partially facially disfigured but still otherwise handsome and human and sexy and you can see what the rest of his face looks like and would otherwise look like without the scarring. Good example: Gerard Butler as Phantom. Of the three, Boggess is the best Christine, followed by O'Byrne, then Rossum falls way behind. I think the sound is better and the picture is obviously improved. If you have seen it; this is your opportunity to enjoy it over and over again!
Now I can hope for another re-buy to get a 4K/UHD version with Atmos (the Atmos being the critical concern). When he falls fatally in love with the lovely young soprano Christine, the Phantom devotes himself to creating a new star for the Opera. My wife had never seen the stage version or heard the soundtrack until recently I played the opening scene of the auction to her. I can't properly explain why, but this is always my go to movie when I feel like a good cry/to feel better after an emotional day. It had such great music in it and I loved the Overture especially!
I just love this verison of Phantom of the Opera with Robert Englund he is one of my favorite horror actors like Nightmare on Elm Street.
