Waxahatchee have been making good records for almost a decade now, but Katie Crutchfield has really outdone herself this time. saint cloud is a masterpiece.I wasn't a big fan of Waxahatchee before this album, although I really liked Crutchfield's previous work with P.S. Eliot. combined clean-cut, aquatic production with a full backing band; 2015’s added drum machines and whirling, mutable synthesizers; 2017’s was loud and grungy, arena guitars fueled by a bitter breakup. ‘Saint Cloud’ is the refreshed, reformed and matured Waxahatchee – and it’s glorious. Games And for that, I am grateful.

Much of The climax of the record, “Ruby Falls,” is where all of the ambition and aesthetics come together. These types of songs, tinged with narcissism, usually addressed to an unidentified "you," are uninteresting in the long run.
On the outstanding “Fire,” she sings that she’s “wiser, slower, and attuned,” words that also serve as the mood throughout There’s a subtle difference between writing that digs and writing that discovers. The sound is now, the sound is timeless, we’ll be listening to this forever.The vocals on Saint Cloud are Katie Crutchfield's most polished, but good vocals don't necessarily make for good music. Crutchfield's best work, like the songs found on American Weekend, Cerulean Salt, and here and there on the subsequent albums ("Silver" is probably her last great song) blends the specific with surreal imagery and broad strokes approaching social commentary. No better from the lyrics or the arrangement of the melody, it can be described as a poetic beauty.

Saint Cloud is all lilacs and creek beds, Memphis skylines and Manhattan subways, love and sobriety, the sound of a cherished songwriter thawing out under the sun. “Ruby Falls” envisions a funeral on the waterways of Crutchfield’s childhood, as she reminds herself that compassion and trust have the capacity to build someone up as well as break a person down.
Cloud never overstays its welcome or does too much or too little, and like all the greats it makes the achievement here look very simple while beneath the surface you know it is anything but.
