Abandoned in infancy by his widowed mother to his grandmother, young Bert was before the age of eight sent away from home to work in order to relieve the family of the expense of keeping him. He leads an amazing life filled with problems (wars, poverty, abuse, the depression) yet always seem to find the bright side and come out of it okay. Would have been nice to hear more about his courtship with his beloved Evelyn Gibson, who serendipitously knitted his parcel of socks when he was in the trenches.Albert Facey was a storyteller. TV Mini-Series Facey experienced much is his eighty-eight years: building a humpy, trapping possums, slaughtering animals, harvesting grain, killing dingoes, kangaroos and emus for the bounty, a massive cattle drive, being lost in the outback, being stuck down a well, laying railway tracks, prize-fighting, conducting and driving trams and buses, farming sheep, cattle, poultry and pigs, growing wheat, Gallipoli and the Depression. Despite enduring hardships we can barely imagine today, Facey always saw his life as a 'fortunate' one.A true classic of Australian literature, his simply written autobiography is an inspiration.

What this man went through and how he handles the many (and there were Many) troubles in life. Interesting and inspirational.I can't be enthusiastic enough about this autobiography by Albert Facey.
Facey couldn’t write during the interesting aspects of his life, so there were no diaries to rely on.While in the second hand store looking for books to read during my month in Costa Rica I came across the memoir, A Fortunate Life. As with 7 Little Australians, gets bonus points for mentioning my home town. It completely changed my perspective on life... truly TRULY well worth the read.. Tells the true story of the life of Albert. It covers in detail an almost Dickensian childhood of poverty and enslavement across southern and western Australia from around the turn of the 20th century. A Fortunate Life Summary. He wrote this book to leave his story behind for his children and we are so lucky that he did. An Aussie friend down here told me it's a very famous book in Australia (He's an english teacher) and recommended to everyone else at our lunch table. It paints a picture of Australia, from the 1900's, at the turn of the century, (when he was born), and further on throughout his life, and details the struggles he faced from a very very young age.. (and there were many).. This book simply and beautifully gives us the meaning of life. From then on, he led a remarkable life from being farmed out at a young age (to cruel and kind families alike), working in agriculture and lifestock, serving during World War I at Gallipoli, surviving the Depression and the loss of a son during World War II. I am so glad he wrote this book.. will be forever grateful to him for sharing his life.. Give it a go... You will NOT be disappointed! Simply perfect. They very soon found they had a bestseller on their hands! I am also very suspicious of the accurate dates and names of people recounted 70 years after the fact. How much things cost and how they were done will be a revelation to present day readers.

Mr Facey was not an author. What a crazy, sad, happy, unfortunate, lonely, blessed, wonderful, adventurous, FORTUNATE life this amazing man had. I thoroughly recommend reading this novel!!.. I was riveted by Albert B. Facey’s story from the first page. It is truly such a beautiful book/ recount of this man's life.
