His family was poor, Joseph was sickly and weak, and his father died of tuberculosis when Joseph was a teenager. He changed the way I think about muscle and strength completely; this was a guy who was small and lean who could bend steel and pull planes by his hair, though the plane incident was something he considered his most dangerous stunt. I remember seeing him at a fair many years ago.
