I picked up this book initially for rather superficial reasons: I share a name with the main character, and I'm also a student at Cambridge, so it grabbed my attention! Joan Stanley is a loving grandmother, living quietly in the suburbs, but she has a dark secret and it is about to come and haunt her.

I was one of the lucky First Reads winners of this book. Loosely based on a real person, Melina Norwood, this book was a fascinating story of a woman who lives her life with a huge secret.

I liked the writing when in the present much better then the writing in the past sections of the book. Unlike Norwood Joan comes to doubt what she has done, and finds a way to distance herself from espionage until the security services finally catch up with her.
