The two are introduced posing as police officers who tell a woman (Celia Pacquola) that her husband — who is about to flee to Rio — has disappeared.This is not an airtight line of work; for starters, as the movie acknowledges, it relies on Jen and Mel’s never running into anyone they deceive. When The Breaker Upperers debuted at Austin’s South by Southwest film festival in March of this year, it was to the kind of uproarious international delight that Kiwi culture so fitfully feeds on – so much so that Variety described writer-director-stars Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami “a female version of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement”. And credit to the director for not forgetting his roots and the friends who came up alongside him: the latest project with his name attached is “The Breaker Upperers,” which he executive produces, but is written by, directed by and stars Waititi collaborators Madeline Sami and Jackie Van Beek.

For a fast-paced comedy, it has the perfect amount of laugh out loud humour which is silly, but simultaneously not afraid to accept and embrace its silliness. Having been cheated on by the same louse, Mel and Jen have a dim view of permanence. If you dare to forage beyond the backstabbing mean girls of “We meet Mel and Jen in alarmingly fake-looking cop uniforms, sitting around the kitchen table of a respectable suburban home while the grieving fresh widow Anna (While it’s hard to explain how the pair’s morally bankrupt schemes continually birth uproarious circumstances—and there are many throughout “The Breaker Upperers”—rest assured that the otherworldly Kiwi sense of humor of Sami and van Beek (also the writer/directors of the film) clicks into place in due course.
