"The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was interestingly the absolute favourite of John Dickson Carr, who undeniably is the master of the locked room mysteries, and Carr often said that Leroux's novel influenced him the most, always making him to push solutions of the locked room mystery to the limits because of the sheer simple brilliance of the solution in Leroux's novel, even it is far from being "simple". Young Joseph is a journalist (as was Leroux before he was able to support himself as an author). When her father and a servant manage to break in the door, they find her badly hurt and bleeding--but there is no one else in the room! Eighteen-year-old Rouletabille is immensely likeable - exuberant youth combined with a penetrating intellect. Reading from a historical perspective you can read the common trends of a good mystery. The writing and plot are both antique, but if you're interested in the everyday upper-class lifestyles of the era, it would be of interest.
