Good reading though if you like long family sagas set in beautiful places.This is one of my all-time-favourite. By the end, it felt like a hard slug to finish it, although when I realised I was on the last page, I didn’t want it to end.Some parts of this book were beautifully written, however some felt a little dragged out. However, armed only with those memories, I would still recommend this Cato read as a good one without hesitation. Philadelphia or Delie as she is referred to in this book, is beautiful, spirited and independent, she longs to become a famous artist. Follows the lives of those in the Australian outback flying doctor service. Sigrid Thornton stars as Philadelphia Gordon, an English artist who undertakes a tragic move to Australia with her family. It thought it was a great story and followed the book very well. This book is rich in language and characterizations. by Coronet Set in the Australia of the early 1900s, a female photographer from England meets and falls for a handsome paddle-boat skipper. The sense of place is wonderfully descriptive, particularly the riverboat scenes seem the flow with precision. Welcome back. I think it's the reason I kept reading. Despite the flaws of the central character, I couldn’t help but compare All the rivers run to the Thornbirds, another great epic novel of Australia.I am still reading this, just hit a slow patch and have put it aside for the time being. It is full of emotion through the beginning till the end, with lots of love and pain. She spends most of her life around Echuca, on the Murray River, and invests some of her inheritance in the paddle steamer called PS Philadelphia.

An Australian classic. It left an indelible impression on me; the movie was equally terrific thanks to the young actress, Sigrid Thornton, who played Delie Gordon.I had wanted to read this book for awhile. Found myself drawn in and travelling in time to the 19th century Australia which held so much adventure for this wonderful woman. I can't remember if I read this before or after we named Brenton.

This is a l-o-n-g book (actually four books published as one) and the last quarter of the book is a bit slow and actually depressing as it covers death, WW2 and the end of the paddle-boats. I am still reading this, just hit a slow patch and have put it aside for the time being. Managed to find a copy at my local library which was over 30 years old and an item that they apparently lent to me from their "stack collection" (whatever that is!
