I thought this movie captures what is was like to be inside a space ship just as well as the new Star Treks, also what it was like to be riding with rockets propelling you, the dangers of space, the problems of making decisions where someone might get killed, the mistrust of the Russians and the Americans (nothing changed there).
As in Arthur C Clarke's source novel, 2010, there is an "explanation" for HAL9000's all too human homicidal acts, but it feels like a letdown...However, just listen to beautiful HAL9000 verbally express his fear to Dave Bowman's entity: " I'm afraid, Dave." I have seen it on numerous occasions, in cinema, TV and Video/DVD. You were never going to get the poetry of a Kubrick film, and the mesmerising scope of the original 2001.
