The author writes perfectly using the dialect and slang of country people in Kentucky. Each piece involves members of the working class trying to understand and come to grips with their places in a changing, broken world. Anything that makes a woman look masculine is frowned upon, because a man is viewed by society as the superior gender. Farm communities and economies are in decline.
