I have great expectations for Book II. Despite the many warts, Eschalon is not without charm, as this game would have been an award-winning achievement in 1986 or so. Everything in this game is done through clicking, and combat is a matter of repeatedly clicking on a monster. The story was interesting and some of the game mechanics were new to me. It claims to be a "return to the Golden Age of RPGs" without any understanding of what made those games any good, and it comes off as slander to those games.
Eschalon delivers in part on this aspect, with chests planted in obscure locations throughout the land.

I can assure you that there's nothing in this game for youIf you have the slightest interest in this game, definitely play the demo first.

Everything from lighting to distance to terrain is taken into account, and much more. ;-) I am completly new to role playing games and am really enjoying this one. Your character has little choice but to keep at least one hand free to hold a torch; granted, slimes and such might battle in pitch darkness, but it’s rather odd that human enemies don’t seem to care about needing light. There's no path-finding, although you can use the middle button to set it on auto-walk and course-correct as needed. 2 in Group Chat. Not all skills have books or NPCs that are experts.

This really helps the combat.This is indeed very similar to Spiderweb's games, with the notable difference that the storyline presentation and writing are a lot better. Eschalon: Book 1. It takes a lot of work to get to a decent Mercantile score.

I particularly like the initial starting storyline for the game... waking up in a destroyed village with no memory of who you are and nothing but a note to put all your trust in... classic stuff for sure. In Shadowmirk the player finds Erubor, who reveals that the Goblins stole the "Crux of Ages" and Gramuk manipulated the Chancellor into believing the Orakur were responsible.
